Citizen Science
Ecological surveying and monitoring is a big part of our Green Corridors York project. This is important for several reasons — baseline species and habitat data show us which species can be found in an area and it gives us an indication of the condition of that habitat. This allows us to plan our practical management appropriately. Building on this data and collecting records regularly over time shows us how the habitat is changing and can inform us of species inclines and declines so that any necessary action can be taken.
The first step in our Green Corridors York ecological monitoring plan when we start to work in a new area is to map the different habitats that we have across the three corridors. Once mapping is complete, we will be carrying out species and habitat surveys. This data will then help us create our improvement plans for the sites.
As well as our regular surveys we will also be hosting a range of Citizen Science events such as BioBlitzes, Night Time Safaris, Wild watches and many more. Please keep an eye on our events page to join in.
We are keen to involve as many volunteers and members of the community as possible. Please see more information about the surveys you can be involved with on the drop down buttons below.
Though surveys are a great way to ensure we are building up a picture of habitats and changes to them, casual species records can tell us a lot too. Collecting Species Lists - WildWatch
St Nicks Wildwatch group welcomes new members at any or no level of expertise. If you can’t tell a house sparrow from a golden eagle or a dandelion from a spotted orchid, but would like to find out, we would love to meet you. We are building a database of the different species living on St Nicks and we need to perform surveys of the wildlife present. Your help would be much appreciated. Whether you are just keen or an expert on wildlife, we would love to welcome you to this group.
The group meets on Wednesday mornings 10am at the Environment Centre for a walk through the reserve. Join in!
