Unleash your inner Poldark! Meadow Keepers, St Nicks’ York-wide grassland management project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, are inviting you to come and enjoy:

  • Scything taster sessions and demonstrations – scything is a traditional technique for mowing grass which is better for wildlife, a great exercise and low carbon as well as quiet way of maintaining meadows. Come and give it a go!
  • Have a go at our scything challenge – how fast can you scythe a 2×5 metre grass strip?

    Pollinator Prowls running between 3-5pm – discover the different pollinators found at St Nicks with renowed artist and bee expert Steven Falk, and our Meadow Keepers Champions. Steven will have some of his amazing artwork and books for sale and signing.

  • Advice on grassland management for wildlife – how to establish pollinator friendly wildflowers and plants in your space
  • wildflower seed bombing, by L OutingWildflower seed bombing challenge – take aim and hit the targets to win prizes while helping improve the meadow at the same time!
  • Seed collecting and sharing
  • Create a scarecrow from the cut hay
  • Find out more about the project, the different sites we’ve been working on, and what we’ve achieved so far.
  • Storytelling and craft activities

Other fun activities and light refreshments – including pollinator inspired cakes – available throughout the day.

Free entry; all ages welcome. Just turn up for some or all of the day!
