Green Exercise: Nordic Walking – Skills and Technique

Led by a qualified instructor, set off from the Environment Centre and explore both the nature reserve and Hull Road Park. Nordic Walking is suitable for all ages and fitness levels; full instruction will be given and Nordic Walking poles provided. Not sure what Nordic Walking is and why it’s so good for you? This session is suitable for beginners and will focus on building skills and technique ready to move onto the 2pm session which is open to those who have some previous Nordic Walking experience.
Our Green Exercise programme is part of our Ecotherapy project and a city-wide bespoke range of activities, which is co-ordinated by York Mind and funded by City of York Council. It is free and open to all York residents aged 18+ who feel they would benefit from improving their wellbeing.

Why Nordic Walking?
It’s not simply walking with poles! It came from the summer training of cross country skiers in Finland but soon become a recognised fitness activity. Poles provide ‘Propulsion ‘ not simply support and unlike ‘trekking’ they are planted BEHIND the walker and power is put through the strap on the top of the pole. This engages the whole body if correct technique is used.
It’s basically a cross trainer for outdoors!! It replicates the action a ‘cross trainer’ machine in the gym but with fresh air, good company and experienced instructors on hand to motivate and inspire.
