December 2015 flood at St Nicks

Join St Nicks Nature Reserve Manager Jonathan Dent and the Civic Party for a walk along the path of December 2015 floods from the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall to the Nature Reserve. The walk will start at 11am with a short introduction from Lauren Marshall who will talk about the impact of the floods at the Hall.

We will then stop a few times along the way to talk about the floods and how green spaces could play a bigger role in reducing the risk of similarly destructive floods repeating by absorbing and slowing down flood waters – the aim is working with nature rather than against it. We’ll finish the 2km walk with a picnic lunch at St Nicks Environment Centre.

Lord Mayor's charities

Thanks to Lord Mayor for supporting us this year!

This event marks the launch of the next stage of the charity’s York Becks Project funded by the current Lord Mayor’s fundraising efforts which will have raised around £6,000 for this project by the end of May. The whole project aims to improve green spaces along the Foss-feeding streams as habitats for local wildlife as well as making them better and more flood-resilient amenities for local communities.

Two Ridings Community Foundation LogoSt Nicks is now looking for further support and volunteers to help spruce up and monitor green spaces along the Tang Hall and Osbaldwick Becks, such as Heworth Holme. Regular volunteer days will provide opportunities to meet neighbours, get exercise and learn about nature as well as how to protect homes from flooding. This walk is a good opportunity to find out more about the project before deciding whether you’d like to be involved or support it. The Becks monitoring scheme is funded by the York Flood Appeal Fund managed by Two Ridings Community Foundation.
