Eco-Active Evening: Mowing Meadows

Thu 17 Aug 2017 at 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

St Nicks Environment Centre, Rawdon Avenue, York, YO10 3ST

Wildflowers in particular can benefit from scything.

Please meet at the Environment Centre and if running late, please call 07542 070466 to find out where exactly the group is.

Work up your appetite for a well deserved dinner at home by getting eco-active in your local meadow. Join in with mowing grass using traditional Austrian Scythes and removing the cuttings into habitat piles and compost areas. No experience is necessary as full training will be given on the day so if you’d like to have a go at scything or help with raking, come along! All ages welcome – children will have fun with the hay. No matter how long you can stay on the day – even just 30 minutes will be a great help, you will be:

  • Improving the grassland area for pollinating insects and encouraging the growth of wildflowers. Aaccording to Buglife, one out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollination taking place so helping the insects is helping us all!
  • Meeting like-minded people in a friendly atmosphere while getting exercise and contributing to your local area looking more colourful and buzzing with life.
  • Learning or improving your scything and raking skills.

All ages and abilities are welcome, full training will be given and tools provided. Under 13s need to be accompanied by an adult and 13-17 year olds need parental consent. This event is part of our Scything for Grassland Management Project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Can’t make this date? There is one session per week throughout August at different sites so check the full list:

If you would like more in depth scything and meadow management training, please get in touch to find out more about the above project and how you can get involved with the management at the different sites.
