Eco-Active Day: Woodland Improvements – Thinning
Sat 13 Jan 2018 at 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
St Nicks Environment Centre, Rawdon Avenue, York, YO10 3ST
Meet at the Environment Centre for the first Eco-Active of the new year in which we turn our attention to woodland management. We will continue our thinning works by felling some of the struggling trees from areas of closed canopy to open up light and space to the woodland floor. This is part of our 5 year thinning plan working to develop the John Lally Community Woodland planted 20 years ago. Although we are cutting trees down this is not to kill them but to cause the trees to regrow vigorously as multi-stemmed coppice which creates a diverse structure, age and size of woodland species. Increased light levels will allow the woodland floor to develop with native plants to support a greater range of wildlife.
You can be part of this exciting process by volunteering your time and energy on the day or by joining our regular volunteers. Tools and gloves will be provided.
